Guided Photo Tour: Omiya

Tokyo boasts lively neighborhoods that pulse with energy and excitement. Hidden gems away from the crowd are as enjoyable as Shibuya and Shinjuku, revealing a different aspect of this stunning city beyond its well-trodden paths.

Omiya, nestled in Saitama just north of Tokyo, beautifully merges with the bustling metro area despite being in a different prefecture. Often lovingly called "little Shinjuku," this charming spot is bound to impress you! With hardly any tourists, it outshines its more famous neighbour. What I find particularly fascinating is the delightful contrast between the mellow, laid-back vibe of the station and the dazzling lights of the lively commercial area.

The famous Hikawa Shrine, known for its bright orange buildings and massive tori gates, is a few minutes walk from Omiya Station.  Located in Omiya Park, the city fades away as you step into the long history of Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Jinja, as it is formally known. The main festival of the shrine is held annually on August 1.

Omiya, famous for its vibrant Izakaya nightlife, also offers delightful experiences throughout the day. When the sunlight bathes the long, narrow alleys, they come alive with cheerful bars, tempting food stalls, and a wonderful mix of people enjoying their time. The maze of weathered electric wires beautifully connects the colourful signs, lighting the way for evening visitors and adding a charming flair to our photos. This unique character, reminiscent of a bygone era, truly shines in our images and makes them unique.

On the opposite side of the railway tracks is Omiya's commercial and retail district, distinguished by a polished façade that simultaneously evokes a sense of nostalgia. Shopping in this area transcends mere commercial activity; it constitutes a nostalgic journey. This distinctive ambiance is extraordinarily challenging to replicate.

These areas provide a unique opportunity to capture stunning images of a region infused with the character that only time can impart. I can easily spend the entire day wandering around Omiya, only pausing in the evening to accept an invitation to one of the many local pubs or restaurants.

A day spent capturing street photography at Omiya Station promises a rewarding experience. The abundance of opportunities ensures you'll return home with fantastic shots and lasting memories, whether during the day or night.

Take a chance on Omiya.  You’ll definitely enjoy it! While it's simple to explore on your own, I’m also delighted to serve as your personal tour guide or organize a photo workshop. Omiya is charming and unique, brimming with character and fantastic photography chances.
